Legal Obligations for employers
Employers of Registered Dietitians, have legal obligations that must be met under the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)
Employers must understand the fundamentals of the RHPA about scope of practice (who can do what in the health care system), mandatory reporting, use of professional titles and other statutory obligations. For example, it is an offence for employers to aid and abet Registered Dietitians to:
perform controlled acts when not legally authorized to do so;
misrepresent or misuse professional titles or status;
use the title "doctor" when dietitians are practicing in a health care environment; or
hold someone out to be qualified to practice dietetics as a Registered Dietitian in Ontario when they are not registered with the College of Dietitians of Ontario.
