Interprofessional Collaboration

Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC) is the provision of comprehensive health services to clients by multiple health caregivers working collaboratively to deliver quality health care. IPC is a synergetic process of communication and decision-making that enables the separate and shared knowledge and skills of health care providers to improve health care outcomes.
 
In dietetic practice, IPC fosters a more efficient use of the expertise and competence of health professionals and effective consultation within the health care team. Ultimately, IPC can increase public access to health care and lead to the best and safest health outcomes for all clients. 

Studies have shown that IPC can lead to:
  • increased access to health care
  • improved outcomes for people with chronic diseases
  • less tension and conflict among caregiver
  • better use of clinical resources
  • easier recruitment of caregivers
  • lower rates of staff turnover (HealthForceOntario)
The College of Dietitians of Ontario feels strongly about supporting RDs to make improvements in all areas of practice that facilitate interprofessional collaboration. A focus on IPC serves several college requirements including fulfilling our:
  • Public protection mandate 
  • Objects as outlined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 to:
     i) Enhance interprofessional collaboration, while respecting the unique
         character of individual health professions and their members; and 

    ii) To promote interprofessional collaboration with other health
         profession colleges.
