Regulation Matters 2020, Issue 3, December

We Commit to Continuous Learning and Improvement

As we move forward into a new year, I spent some time reflecting on the lessons learned through the two incredibly significant events of the year — the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial unrest in Canada and beyond. To avoid repeating tragic and painful histories, I feel that we must seize these opportunities to learn and improve. We have made commitments to do better in the future and we need to hold ourselves accountable to those commitments. Too many have lost too much to do otherwise.

Informed Anti-Racism Action

The College has committed to informed anti-racism action that leads to sustainable and meaningful change in how we carry out our public protection mandate. Over the last few months, we have engaged with our regulatory colleagues both in Ontario and across Canada to gain a better understanding of what needs to change and how to change it.  The College is working with an expert in the field of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) to provide education and to help us develop an action plan for the future.  The first step has been ensuring that all staff, Council and committee members are properly informed on EDI issues. This will contribute to the foundation we need as an organization for the work ahead.

The Pandemic - Managing Stress in Uncertain Times

The pandemic is still with us, and will no doubt continue well into 2021. We recognize that many dietitians have faced difficult challenges in their practice and that there may be more ahead. We will continue to provide timely and relevant information to help dietitians practise safely. We hope that the article, Managing Stress in Uncertain Times, will help.

In our recent survey about the College’s pandemic communications, most dietitians thought that we did well, and we also received valuable constructive feedback, which we are putting into practice. For details, see the article in this newsletter, Survey Provides Insight into College Pandemic Communication. Please contact the College’s Practice Advisory Service for questions or comments.

Coming out of 2020, making our way through the pandemic and into greater progress on racial equity, we will have what may be, for many of us, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build a better version of the world in which we currently find ourselves. I hope this fills you with the same feeling of hope and promise that it does me.
Until then, have a safe and healthy holiday season and a Happy New Year.
