Approval of work plans and budgets
Council approved the proposed 2018/19 work plans and budgets. In this budget, Council also approved an increase for membership fees (based an inflation rate of 1.5%) to $629.00 per member.
Lab Ordering Authority Update
Deborah Cohen, Practice Advisor and Policy Analyst, provided an update regarding the lab ordering authority work with the details that lead to the March 2018 supplementary response to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s request for information regarding the proposed scope of practice expansion to permit Registered Dietitians to directly order laboratory tests in support of nutrition care assessment and monitoring.
Code of Ethics
Carole Chatalalsingh, Practice Advisor and Policy Analyst, discussed the development of updating the code of ethics for RDs and how it would be beneficial to the public. Staff will work with the Legislative Issues Committee to develop the new code of ethics.
Council Elections Results
On January 23, 2018, election notices were sent by email to members in Districts 5, 6 and 7. The nominations period was closed on February 20th, 2018, at 5pm.
Only one nomination was submitted for each district and these members were elected by acclamation.
Teresa Taillefer RD, MHS, District 5
Teresa Taillefer graduated in 1990 from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Nutrition and completed her internship at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario the following year. In 2008, she completed her Masters of Health Studies in the Leadership Stream at the University of Athabasca.
Teresa has focused most of her clinical career in diabetes education. In 2011, Teresa transitioned to Health Leadership as the coordinator of Diabetes Services, Outpatient Nutrition Counselling and Ophthalmology Clinic at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario. As a manager, Teresa has focused on empowering staff to improve clinical practice, standardize processes and improve patient experience.
Trina Pearson RD, District 6
Trina graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Ecology Foods and Nutrition and completed an internship with the Misericordia Health Center in Winnipeg, MB in 2001. Since that time, Trina has worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Thunder Bay, ON, in transition/extensive services, complex chronic Care, and outpatient clinics. More recently, she has worked in geriatric assessment and rehabilitative care, long term palliative care, and hospice programs.
Trina is also the Practice Lead for the Registered Dietitians of St. Joseph’s Care Group where her focus has been on supporting the RD scope of practice, and on advocacy efforts to fill gaps in nutrition services throughout the organization. Trina is passionate about eradicating malnutrition and is a strong advocate for advancing the interdisciplinary nutrition care of their clients.
Diana Balicsak RD, CDE, District 7
Diana is a graduate of Ryerson University and the Hospital for Sick Children Dietetic Internship Program. She has been practicing as a clinical dietitian for the past 20 years and is currently working at The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre. Diana enjoys mentoring dietetic interns and working with the College as a Peer and Practice Assessor. Diana has also served on the Advisory Group for the Sustainable Food Systems Leadership Team within Dietitians of Canada.
