Regulation Matters 2020 - Issue 1, May

A Message from the Registrar & ED

From email sent to members, May 4th, 2020

Many of you have reached out in response to the letter I sent at the beginning of May, posted below. I’ve read each one of your emails (and 1 postcard!) and appreciate that you’ve taken the time to share your thoughts. Letting me know that my words meant something to you, has meant very much to me.

Thank you and stay well,

Melisse

Message from the Registrar & ED.

Every time I write one of these messages I ask myself “What do I want to say to Registered Dietitians right now?” I know that you’re busy working, raising families, taking care of parents, essentially just living your lives. And I don’t want to waste your time. This stands now more than ever and I rewrote this piece three times, each time not quite hitting the mark of what I want to say. It’s not perfect but here’s what I want to say to you during this upside-down time:

We know you are tired and stressed. You have your good days and your bad days. Maybe you’ve cried for reasons you understand and reasons you don’t. Same goes for laughing. Some of you are in the thick of providing care for very sick clients, some of you are not working right now. You’re probably all worried about the future, a little or a lot. Maybe you’re like me and you scour the news and social media for updates and hope. Or you avoid it like the plague, and that’s not just a saying anymore. You’ve probably become more familiar with Zoom than you ever thought you’d be, and still getting used to “virtual” get-togethers. Maybe you’re worried about losing someone close to you through the virus or otherwise, or you already have. I did. It’s hard.

Whatever you’re doing right now, it matters. To your family, your friends and your clients. We talk about you all the time, every day. We discuss your practice questions, your challenges, your successes and your frustrations. We try to answer as best we can but even in the best of times we don’t have all the answers. Sometimes, the most we can do is help you sort through the jumble in front of you to find a path forward, even if that path is untested and unclear. At some point, we will come out of this and life as we knew it, or at least some of it, will slowly slip back into place. Until then, bring us your questions, your concerns, your messy jumbles. We’re here.
