OPTION 1 - COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT

The Competency Assessment involves two separate components:

  1. The Knowledge and Competency Assessment Tool (KCAT) – a multiple choice exam which tests your foundational knowledge and practice competencies against the national standards. Your results on the KCAT will determine whether you are eligible to proceed to the Practice-Based Assessment or if you require additional education/training before pursuing registration with the College. Click here to view KCAT preparation guide

  2. Practice Based Assessment  (PBA) – A practical assessment that will include oral and written components to assess competency compared to standards for dietetic practice in Canada. Click here to view PBA preparation guide

Based on the result of the PBA, you may:
    1. Be required to complete additional education or training; or
    2. Be deemed eligible to write the national registration examination.

APPLICATION PROCESS - COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT

The process for applying to the Competency Assessment are explained below.  The KCAT, PBA, and the national registration examination must be completed in Canada, however you may complete the WES assessment and apply to write the KCAT from outside Canada.

Step 1 - WES

The first step in the Competency Assessment process is to have any degree(s) you received outside of North America assessed through the World Education Service (WES). This service will evaluate the level of the degree compared to Canadian degrees (e.g. Bachelor, Masters, Doctoral level).  The result of this assessment will be considered in determining your eligibility to complete the KCAT (see step 2). Request a course by course evaluation report and sent it to the College by purchasing WES ICAP service.

Step 2 - Application form and fees

Download the KCAT application form and submit it, along with all required documents and fees. Please contact the College (Heena.Vyas@collegeofdietitians.org ) for assistance, if you are having difficulty accessing documents required for your application.

Once the College has received your KCAT application form, fees and required documents, the College will determine whether you are eligible to write the KCAT.

Step 3 - KCAT

If you are deemed eligible to write the KCAT, you will be provided instructions to register and pay for the KCAT.  You will receive the results of the KCAT within 8-10 weeks after the assessment.  Depending on the results of the KCAT, you will either be directed to complete:
  • Additional education and/or training. College staff will direct you to approved or accredited programs. These programs are independent from the College, so you will need to apply directly to the programs for admission.
    • If you complete an approved program or programs, you will be deemed to meet the College's academic and practical training requirements for registration.  At this point, you may apply to write the national registration examination.  You may also apply for a temporary certificate of registration while you wait to write the exam and receive the results.
    • If you do not complete an approved program, you may complete other courses or training and reapply to take the KCAT to determine whether you have sufficiently addressed the gaps in your knowledge and skills.

      OR

  • The Practice Based Assessment, which uses a variety of prior learning assessment methods to assess your current level of competency against the national standards. This assessment will determine your readiness to take the national registration examination. The practice-based assessment will be scheduled within a few weeks after you receive the results of the KCAT. Click here to view PBA preparation guide. There are two possible outcomes of the PBA:
    • If your level of competency is deemed to be substantially equivalent to the Canadian standards, you will be eligible to apply to write the national registration examination.   You may choose to apply for a temporary certificate of registration while you wait to write the national registration exam and receive the results.
    • If your current level of competency is not deemed substantially equivalent to the Canadian standards, you will be required to complete additional education and/or training.  The College will provide you with information about approved programs or courses.
